History
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and took approximately six years to complete. The building was officially inaugurated on 4 January 2010. The tower was originally named Burj Dubai but was later renamed Burj Khalifa in honor of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The skyscraper was developed by Emaar Properties and designed by architect Adrian Smith. The design of the tower was inspired by Islamic architecture and the Hymenocallis desert flower. The structure uses a bundled tube design that allows it to withstand strong desert winds and maintain structural stability at extreme heights.
Architecture and Design
Burj Khalifa features a modern architectural design combined with traditional Middle Eastern elements. The building contains more than 160 habitable floors and includes residential apartments, corporate offices, luxury hotels, restaurants, and observation decks. The tower uses high performance glass panels and aluminum cladding to reflect sunlight and reduce heat inside the building. More than 26,000 glass panels were used in the construction of the exterior façade. The building also includes one of the fastest elevator systems in the world allowing visitors to reach the observation decks within seconds.
