Can You Apply for a UAE Golden Visa While Still on a Standard Employment Visa?

Published 30 Jul 2026 · 2 min read

Someone currently employed in the UAE on a standard employment visa who becomes eligible for a Golden Visa, through a salary threshold, a professional achievement, or an independent investment, generally doesn't need to resign or have their existing employment visa cancelled before applying, a detail that reassures many applicants worried about jeopardizing their job to pursue the upgrade.

The Golden Visa application and its underlying eligibility assessment, nomination where applicable, and supporting document submission can generally proceed while the applicant remains actively employed and sponsored under their existing employment visa, since the two processes, the standard visa's continued validity and the Golden Visa's approval pipeline, don't inherently conflict with each other during the application stage itself. This means an employed professional pursuing a Golden Visa through, for example, a qualifying salary threshold or a specialized talent nomination, can generally continue working normally throughout the months an application might take to process.

The transition point that does require action is once the Golden Visa is actually approved and ready for issuance: at that stage, the standard employment visa is generally cancelled as part of moving over to the Golden Visa, since a person can only hold one primary residence visa at a time, but this cancellation happens as the final step of the Golden Visa becoming active rather than as a precondition for applying in the first place. Employment itself with the same employer generally continues unaffected by this visa transition, since the Golden Visa doesn't require ending the underlying job, only changing which visa category the residency itself is based on.

Given how much smoother this transition tends to be than applicants often expect, anyone currently employed and considering Golden Visa eligibility shouldn't assume pursuing it puts their existing job or visa status at risk during the application process, though confirming the exact sequencing and timing for their specific category directly through ICP or their employer's PRO is still worth doing before assuming every detail applies uniformly.
