The 30-day grace period, explained
Your card expiring is not the moment the fine starts. ICP gives a 30-day grace period after expiry with no penalty at all — renew on day 29 and you pay exactly the same as renewing on day 1. Miss that window and a fine of AED 20 per day begins accruing from day 31, capped at AED 1,000 once you've been expired for roughly 80 days in total. The fine stops growing at the cap, but the sooner you renew after that point, the better — an expired Emirates ID can also disrupt bank access, telecom services and other day-to-day essentials that check it.

How much does Emirates ID renewal actually cost?
The core government charge is AED 100 for every year of validity — AED 200 for a 2-year card, AED 300 for a 3-year card, AED 1,000 for a 10-year Golden Visa card. On top of that sits a service fee: AED 100 if you renew online through ICP Smart Services or the app, or roughly AED 30 to 70 if you go through a typing centre. Add AED 150 only if you need express Fawri processing. There is no fee for biometrics on a normal renewal.
What happens if I don't renew on time?

A typing centre charges less for the service itself (roughly AED 30 to 70, varying by centre) but is useful if you'd rather have someone else handle the paperwork, or if your case needs in-person help — sponsor mismatches, data corrections, or biometrics appointments.
Do children need to renew their Emirates ID too?
Yes — every UAE resident on a residence visa needs a valid Emirates ID, including children. The card fee is identical to an adult's (AED 100 per year of validity), but children under 15 skip the biometrics step, which can make the process slightly faster.
What if my Emirates ID is lost or damaged instead of just expired?
That's a replacement, not a renewal, and it's priced differently: a flat AED 300 replacement fee plus the same service fee (online or typing centre), rather than the per-year card fee.
