How to Renew Your Dubai Trade License: Costs, Documents & Penalties

Every business operating in Dubai, whether on the mainland or in a free zone, is required to renew its trade license annually to remain legally authorized to operate. This isn't just a formality: an expired license can block visa renewals, disrupt banking, and in some cases lead to the business being suspended or blacklisted, so it's one of the more important recurring compliance tasks for any UAE company.

For mainland businesses, the renewal process is handled through the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), typically via the Invest in Dubai portal or DubaiNow app. Before starting, it's worth confirming your Ejari (the official tenancy registration for your office lease) is valid, since an expired or missing Ejari is one of the most common reasons mainland renewals get held up. Beyond the Ejari, you'll typically need updated passport copies for all shareholders, your current trade license, and in some cases a signed renewal form, plus any third-party approvals required for regulated activities (healthcare businesses need Dubai Health Authority approval, for example, while food businesses need Dubai Municipality sign-off). Free zone renewals follow a similar logic but are managed directly through each free zone's own portal, and don't require an Ejari since tenancy in a free zone is handled by the free zone authority itself.

Costs vary significantly depending on your license type, business activity, number of visas attached to the license, and whether you're on the mainland or in a free zone. Most authorities recommend starting the renewal process a month or so before your expiry date, both to allow time to resolve any document issues and to avoid falling into the grace period that follows expiry. Missing that grace period typically triggers a recurring monthly fine that accumulates the longer the license stays unrenewed, on top of a separate penalty for operating with an expired license in the first place; some free zones apply penalties immediately with no grace period at all.

Beyond the direct fines, letting a trade license lapse can have knock-on effects that are easy to underestimate: banks may restrict account activity, employee visa renewals can freeze, and repeated late renewals can put a company at risk of being blacklisted, which makes future licensing difficult. Because exact fees, grace periods, and document requirements can differ by free zone and by emirate, it's worth checking your license's specific renewal terms directly on the relevant authority's portal rather than assuming the same rules apply everywhere.
