A labour contract amendment updates specific terms within an already-active employment contract, job title, salary, occupation classification, or certain personal details, without changing the contract's overall validity period or resetting its start date, distinguishing it clearly from a full contract renewal, which replaces an expiring contract with an entirely new fixed-term agreement.

The amendment process is handled electronically: the employer's authorized signatory submits the modification request through MOHRE's website, smart application, or an authorized Tasheel service center, and provided the establishment's file is clear of violations and the submitted documentation is accurate, MOHRE typically processes the request within two working days. The federal fee for a contract modification is a flat AED 50, considerably lower than a full renewal, which carries the broader work permit renewal fee scaled to the company's compliance classification.

One rule catches some employers off guard: MOHRE does not process modifications to an already-expired contract. If a contract has lapsed, it needs to be renewed first, restoring it to active status, before any amendment can then be submitted as a separate, subsequent request. Attempting to submit a modification against an expired contract simply won't go through, regardless of how minor the intended change is.

Common reasons a modification request gets rejected or delayed largely mirror the issues that affect other MOHRE transactions: incomplete or inaccurate documentation, a mismatch between a proposed new job title and the establishment's licensed business activities, an expired or invalid trade license, outstanding violations on the company's MOHRE file, or the new terms failing to meet minimum qualification requirements for the stated skill level. Given how inexpensive and fast a straightforward amendment typically is compared to a full renewal, it's generally worth confirming the establishment's compliance status is clean before submitting, since a rejected amendment due to an unrelated underlying violation costs more time to resolve than the amendment itself would have taken if the file had been clear from the start.
