Setting Up an Event Management Company in the UAE

Event management is a well-established sector in the UAE given the country's heavy calendar of conferences, exhibitions, weddings, and corporate events, and setting up an event management business generally follows standard commercial licensing but with a few sector-specific approvals to factor in depending on the type and scale of events being organized.

A standard event management trade license, available through both mainland DET and numerous free zones, typically covers event planning, coordination, and management services as a core activity, and many event companies also add related activities like exhibition organizing or entertainment services under the same license depending on their specific service scope. For events involving public gathering in a physical venue, particularly larger events, organizers generally need a specific event permit from the relevant authority, such as Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism events permit system, submitted well ahead of the event date and covering details like expected attendance, venue, and safety arrangements.

Events involving certain additional elements carry their own extra approvals: outdoor events may need Dubai Municipality or the relevant municipality's approval for temporary structures and public space use, events featuring live entertainment or performers sometimes need separate entertainment permits, and events serving alcohol require the venue itself to hold the relevant alcohol license, since event organizers generally cannot independently authorize alcohol service without the venue's own licensing covering it.

For larger-scale exhibitions and trade shows specifically, organizers often need to coordinate directly with venue operators like Dubai World Trade Centre or ADNEC, which have their own event approval and safety compliance processes layered on top of the general municipal event permit. Given how much event permit requirements vary based on event type, scale, and venue, building in extra lead time for permit approvals, and confirming requirements directly with the relevant authority for each specific event, is generally more reliable than assuming a template approval process applies universally.
