Trademark Registration in the UAE: Process, Costs, and Requirements

Trademark registration in the UAE is a distinct legal process from trade name reservation, and this distinction trips up a surprising number of business owners: reserving a trade name with the Department of Economy and Tourism (or the equivalent free zone process) secures your company's registered legal name, but it does not protect your brand, logo, or tagline as a trademark. If brand protection matters, separate registration with the Ministry of Economy is required.

The process begins with a clearance search, checking whether the intended trademark is already in use or registered, generally done through the Ministry of Economy's online portal or via a licensed trademark agent, since the UAE doesn't disclose its full trademark database through free public search tools. Applications are filed under the Nice Classification system, an internationally standardized framework organizing goods and services into 45 distinct classes, and each class requires its own separate filing fee, meaning a brand seeking protection across several categories (a food and beverage brand covering food products, beverages, and restaurant services, for example) needs to file and pay for multiple classes rather than one blanket application.

Once submitted, the Ministry of Economy reviews the application, a process that can take up to 30 days, and if accepted, the trademark is published in the Trademark Journal along with a further 30-day public objection window before final registration. If accepted through this window without formal objection, the applicant proceeds to final registration and payment, receiving a certificate valid for 10 years from the filing date, renewable for further 10-year periods.

A UAE national trademark, once registered with the Ministry of Economy, provides protection across all seven emirates, including within free zones, since free zone authorities themselves don't register trademarks independently; this national-level MOE registration remains essential regardless of which specific free zone a business operates from. For businesses wanting broader international protection beyond the UAE, the country's membership in the Madrid Protocol allows filing a single international application through the Ministry of Economy to extend protection into any of the 130-plus member countries, considerably more efficient than filing separate national applications in each target country.
