UAE Blue Visa: Eligibility for the New Environmental Residency

The UAE Blue Visa, officially the Blue Residency Visa, is a 10-year, renewable, self-sponsored residence permit created specifically for individuals who have made significant, verifiable contributions to environmental protection, sustainability, climate action, or renewable energy. Announced by the UAE Cabinet in May 2024 as part of the country's designated Year of Sustainability, the first cohort received the visa at the World Government Summit, with wider applications opening from mid-April 2026.

Unlike the Golden Visa, which spans investors, entrepreneurs, and exceptional talent across essentially any sector, the Blue Visa is restricted entirely to documented environmental impact. Eligibility is generally organised around several defined categories, commonly including organisation members and influencers in the environmental space, scientists and researchers, environmental business investors, inventors, and senior environmental specialists, with the visa administered jointly by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. In practice, the process remains substantially nomination-driven, meaning candidates are often identified or endorsed by relevant government authorities rather than applying cold through an open portal.

The visa does not require a UAE employer, property investment, or minimum capital, and it does not automatically grant work rights; holders wanting to be employed in the UAE still need separate work authorisation sponsored by an employer. Family sponsorship terms are notably broad, extending to a spouse, children of any age, and parents, matching the Golden Visa's family provisions, and Blue Visa holders can also sponsor domestic workers under the same framework as other long-term residence categories.

Because the Blue Visa launched relatively recently and continues to be described as nomination-driven rather than a straightforward open application, prospective applicants working in genuinely qualifying environmental fields should confirm the current process, which of the defined categories fits their profile, and any nomination requirements, directly with the ICP's Blue Residency portal rather than assuming a standard self-service application applies.
