Registration for Smart Gates generally happens automatically for many residents during a standard passport control interaction, meaning travelers who've recently passed through manual passport control at a UAE airport may already be registered without having taken any separate action. Once registered, using a Smart Gate is straightforward: the traveler simply looks at the camera above the gate for biometric facial verification, or in some cases scans a biometric passport, bypassing the traditional counter entirely for a considerably faster clearance process, particularly valuable during busy travel periods when standard passport control queues can be lengthy.

Certain traveler categories are generally excluded from Smart Gate use regardless of registration status: People of Determination and guests with large strollers, families traveling with young children, and guests under a certain age or height threshold typically need to use the standard passport control counter rather than the automated gate, reflecting the physical and procedural limitations of the automated system for these specific traveler categories. Given how a resident's Smart Gate registration can lapse under certain circumstances (an extended absence from the UAE, for example, of six months or more, is a commonly cited trigger requiring re-registration), residents who haven't traveled recently should check their registration status through ICP's or GDRFA's online services before assuming Smart Gate access remains active, rather than discovering a lapsed registration only when already at the airport expecting expedited clearance.
