A UAE employment visa is the residence permit that allows a foreign national to live and work in the country under the sponsorship of a licensed UAE employer. Unlike the Golden Visa, it's tied directly to your job: if your employment ends, your visa is generally affected as well, though a grace period is provided to allow time to find new sponsorship or exit the country.

The process typically starts before you even arrive in the UAE. Your employer secures a work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), confirming that the role and salary align with your qualifications and the company's registered business activities. From there, an entry permit is issued, allowing you to travel to the UAE (or, if you're already in the country on a visit visa, allowing an in-country status change instead). Once in the UAE, every applicant aged 18 and older must complete a mandatory medical fitness test, which screens for a small number of specific communicable diseases at an approved government health center. After passing the medical test, you'll complete biometric registration for your Emirates ID, and finally have your residence visa stamped into your passport, which is the step that finalizes your legal residency status.

Employment visas are generally valid for two years and are renewable as long as your employment continues and your employer remains compliant with UAE labor regulations, including the Wages Protection System that ensures salaries are paid through approved banking channels. By law, employers are responsible for covering visa-related costs and cannot deduct these fees from an employee's salary. Total costs typically depend on the employer's compliance classification, the employee's skill level, and the specific emirate of employment, so getting an accurate quote usually means checking directly with your employer's PRO team or the relevant government portal rather than assuming a flat figure applies everywhere.

Processing timelines depend on how complete your documentation is and whether you're applying from inside or outside the UAE; incomplete files are consistently the biggest source of delay.
