UAE Green Visa: Eligibility, Benefits, and Application Process

The UAE Green Visa is a 5-year, self-sponsored residence permit aimed at skilled professionals, freelancers, and self-employed individuals who want to live in the UAE without being tied to an employer or family sponsor. Introduced as part of the UAE's broader immigration reforms, it sits between the standard two-year employment visa and the longer, higher-threshold Golden Visa.

Eligibility runs along three main tracks. Skilled employees need a valid UAE employment contract, a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000, at least a bachelor's degree, and a classification within occupational skill levels 1 to 3 under MOHRE's system. Freelancers and self-employed professionals need a valid freelance or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE or an approved free zone, along with proof of at least AED 360,000 in annual income over the previous two years, or alternative proof of financial solvency. A third track covers investors or partners in UAE commercial ventures, who need proof of investment or a valid trade license rather than income documentation.

The application process follows a broadly similar structure to other residence visas: submitting the required documents (passport, proof of income or employment, attested educational certificates, and a completed application) through ICP's platform or an authorized service center, followed by the standard medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics, and visa stamping sequence once approved. Processing typically takes three to four weeks from complete document submission. One frequently cited advantage over standard employment visas is the extended grace period after cancellation or expiry, along with somewhat broader family sponsorship rights, including for parents in some cases.

Since the Green Visa is self-sponsored, holders aren't tied to a single employer or company the way standard employment visa holders are, giving freelancers and skilled professionals more flexibility to change clients or employers without needing an entirely new visa sponsorship process each time. Given the income and qualification thresholds involved, particularly for the freelancer track, it's worth gathering solid, clearly documented proof of income (bank statements matching invoices, for example) well before applying, since unclear financial documentation is a commonly cited reason for rejection.
