Visa renewal goes wrong in a predictable way. Nobody forgets the expiry date entirely — they underestimate how many separate steps sit behind it, and how many of those steps depend on someone else moving first.
Start 30 days out
Not the week before. Employment and residence visas typically carry a 30-day grace period after expiry, but treating that as your buffer means any single delay puts you into overstay, where fines now accrue at AED 50 a day with no ceiling.
Thirty days ahead gives room for the two steps most likely to slip: the medical and anything requiring your employer.
The sequence
- Employer or sponsor initiates. If you are employed, your company PRO usually starts the process. This is the most common single point of delay, and you have the least control over it — chase early rather than assuming it is in hand.
- Medical fitness test. Blood test and chest X-ray at an approved centre. Standard results take a few days; express options exist at higher cost. Anything flagged extends the timeline considerably.
- Emirates ID application or renewal. Runs alongside the visa and has its own biometrics appointment and its own fines if allowed to lapse separately.
- Visa stamping or digital issuance. Increasingly digital, which has shortened this stage significantly compared with a few years ago.
- Update dependents. Sponsored family visas are tied to yours and do not renew automatically. Their expiry dates may differ from yours — check each one.
The dependencies people miss
Your tenancy contract. Renewal often requires a valid Ejari-registered tenancy. If your lease is expiring around the same time as your visa, sequence the tenancy renewal first, because the visa process may stall waiting for it.
Outstanding fines. Traffic fines and other penalties can block processing entirely. Clear them before you start rather than discovering the block mid-application.
Passport validity. A minimum period of remaining validity is required. If your passport needs renewing too, that goes first, and it is on your consulate's timetable rather than yours.
Dependents on different cycles. Family members sponsored at different times have different expiry dates. Renewing yours does not renew theirs.
What it costs
Government fees, medical testing, Emirates ID, typing centre charges, and any refundable deposit — multiplied across every family member. Employers commonly cover the employee's renewal but not dependents', so a family of four can involve a meaningful outlay landing in one month.

If you have already slipped past expiry
Move immediately. Since February 2026, fines are AED 50 per day with no cap, they accrue automatically without any notification, and smart-gate systems flag them at every border. Employers also now receive automatic prompts to file absconding reports where a sponsored employee's status is not regularised, which turns a paperwork lapse into an employment problem.
