Common DED Violations and Fines UAE Businesses Should Know

The Department of Economy and Tourism, along with equivalent departments in other emirates, actively inspects mainland businesses for compliance and issues fines for a range of violations, some of which are surprisingly easy for otherwise compliant businesses to fall into without realizing it.

One of the more common violations is operating an activity not listed on the trade license, such as a general trading company quietly offering consulting services on the side, or a retail shop selling products outside its licensed category. Displaying prices incorrectly or failing to display prices at all on goods for sale is another frequent inspection finding, particularly in retail and food and beverage businesses, as UAE consumer protection rules require clear price disclosure.

Failing to display the trade license or Emirates ID of staff prominently at the business premises, operating from a different address than the one registered with Ejari and the license, and allowing the trade license to lapse past its renewal deadline are all also commonly cited violations during routine inspections. For food businesses specifically, hygiene and food safety violations carry their own separate and often steeper fine schedule enforced alongside DED inspections by the relevant municipality food safety department.

Fine amounts vary considerably by violation type and by emirate, ranging from a few hundred dirhams for minor documentation issues to tens of thousands of dirhams for serious violations like operating entirely without a valid license or repeat offenses. Because inspection priorities and fine schedules are periodically updated, and repeat violations typically escalate in severity, businesses are generally better served by a periodic internal compliance check, covering license activity match, Ejari validity, and staff documentation, than by waiting to find out about a gap during an actual inspection.
