WebP is excellent on the web, which is exactly why so many sites use it — it is noticeably smaller than JPG at the same quality. The friction starts once the file leaves the browser. Common places a .webp is rejected or simply will not open:

Why will my WebP file not open?
WebP is a newer format that browsers handle perfectly, but many desktop programs do not. Older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and plenty of upload forms simply do not recognise it, so the file appears broken or is rejected. Converting it to JPG solves the problem instantly, because JPG is accepted essentially everywhere.
Why do images I save from the web come out as WebP?
Many websites now serve images in WebP because the format is significantly smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which makes their pages load faster. When you right-click and save one, you get the WebP file the site actually served. The picture itself is fine; only the container format is unfamiliar to older software.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
There is a small, generally invisible loss, because both WebP and JPG are compressed formats and the image is re-encoded. This tool uses a high quality setting by default, so the result looks the same to the eye. What conversion cannot do is restore detail the original WebP had already discarded.

What happens to a transparent WebP?
