Frequently Asked Questions
What UAE cardholders ask about EMI plans and minimum payments
What is a credit card EMI or "Easy Payment Plan" in the UAE?
Most UAE banks let you convert a large purchase or an existing balance into fixed monthly instalments at a reducing interest rate, typically 1.5%–2.5% per month (about 20–35% reducing APR), over 3 to 36 months. It replaces open-ended revolving debt with a fixed payment and a clear end date.
What is the minimum payment on a UAE credit card?
Banks typically require 5% of the outstanding balance (with a fixed minimum, often around AED 100) each month. Paying only this keeps the account in good standing but leaves the rest on the card accruing interest — usually 3.09%–3.75% per month, one of the highest borrowing costs available.
Is it better to pay the minimum or convert to an EMI plan?
Converting to an EMI plan is almost always cheaper and faster. Minimum payments are calculated on a shrinking balance at a high revolving rate, so they can take years to clear a debt that an EMI plan would close in a fixed, much shorter term at a lower reducing rate.
Does converting to EMI hurt my credit score?
No — converting to a structured payment plan is generally viewed favourably, since it shows the debt is being actively managed with a clear repayment schedule. Missing minimum payments or carrying a high balance for a long time is what damages a credit score.
Are there fees for a credit card EMI plan?
Most banks charge a one-time processing fee, commonly 1–3% of the converted amount, on top of the monthly interest. Some cards run promotional 0% EMI plans for specific retailers or periods — always ask whether interest, not just the processing fee, is genuinely zero.
Can I pay off a credit card EMI plan early?
Usually yes, though an early settlement fee may apply — commonly around 1% of the remaining balance, sometimes waived. Paying off early on a reducing-rate EMI plan still saves interest even after a modest settlement fee, unlike a flat-rate plan.
