GEMS Modern Academy was founded as Dubai Modern High School on 18 October 1986 by Sunny Varkey, and has grown into Dubai's leading Indian curriculum school, located in the Nad Al Sheba area. In 2011, former US President Bill Clinton visited the school as chief guest for its 25th Anniversary celebrations, as part of his wider initiative to expand access to education.
GEMS Modern Academy is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, preparing students for the ICSE examination in Grade 10 and the ISC examination in Grade 12, while also offering the International Baccalaureate as a dual pathway — including the IB Primary Years Programme (since 2021) and IB Diploma Programme (since 2014) — making it an IB World School with candidacy status for the Middle Years Programme achieved in August 2021.
