About Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi
Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) was established in May 2006 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, through a partnership between Sorbonne Université in Paris and the Government of Abu Dhabi. In December 2009 the university moved into its purpose-built permanent campus on Al Reem Island, spanning more than 93,000 square metres of teaching, recreational, and accommodation facilities beneath its landmark dome.
SUAD delivers programmes from bachelor's to doctorate level through three schools: Arts and Humanities, Data Science and Engineering, and Law, Economics and Business, taught in French or English. Degrees are issued jointly by Sorbonne Université and Université Paris Cité, evaluated by France's Higher Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES), and accredited by the UAE's Commission for Academic Accreditation. The university educates around 1,800 students representing more than 80 nationalities.
Since October 2024, SUAD's SAFIR institute (Sorbonne Abu Dhabi for Innovation and Research) has hosted seven research centres addressing sustainability, artificial intelligence, and marine science, aligned with Abu Dhabi's Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The campus includes the largest Francophone library in the GCC, a 700-seat auditorium, and the UAE's largest university indoor climbing wall, alongside a Continuing and Executive Education Department for working professionals.
