About University of Sharjah
The University of Sharjah (UoS) was founded in October 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, a member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as a private, national, co-educational university. It began with colleges of Engineering, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Administration, and Sharia and Islamic Studies, with the College of Fine Arts and Design and College of Health Sciences following in 1998.
UoS has since grown into a comprehensive university with 14 colleges — including Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Communication, Sciences, and Computing and Informatics — offering more than 130 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to over 21,000 students. The main campus sits in University City on the southern edge of Sharjah, close to Sharjah International Airport, with additional facilities in Khorfakkan, Kalba, Dhaid, and Meleha, and the university operates its own University Hospital Sharjah and University Dental Hospital, opened in 2011.
Licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education and accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, UoS runs 18 research centres focused on areas including renewable energy, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and Islamic economics, and partners with international institutions across Japan, Germany, and the UK. Its blend of traditional Arab architecture and modern research facilities reflects its founding vision of combining Islamic and Arab traditions with contemporary academic excellence.
