About this experience

Kayaking in the UAE splits between mangrove channels and open coastline, and they offer very different mornings.

The mangrove routes wind through sheltered tidal channels where the water is flat and the wildlife is the attraction — herons, flamingos in season, small fish and crabs visible through clear shallow water. It is slow, quiet and suits complete beginners.

Coastal paddling around the Marina or Palm gives you the skyline from water level and is more exposed, with chop and wind to contend with.

Either way it is one of the few Dubai activities with no engine noise, which is more of a relief than you expect. Clear-bottom kayaks are offered on some routes and are worth it in the mangroves where there is something to see below.

Highlights

  • Sheltered mangrove channels with flat water
  • Herons and seasonal flamingos in the tidal areas
  • Clear-bottom kayaks available on some routes
  • No experience needed for the mangrove routes

Know before you go

  • Early morning is coolest and has the calmest water
  • You will get wet — bring a change of clothes
  • Mangrove routes are tide-dependent, so departure times shift
  • Sun exposure is significant with no shade on the water
  • Coastal routes are more demanding than mangrove ones
