About Gulf Medical University
Gulf Medical University (GMU) traces its origins to 1998, when it was founded as Gulf Medical College by Dr. Thumbay Moideen under Decree No. 1 issued by His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al-Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, as the first medical college of its kind in the UAE. The college began with the MBBS programme, added a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2000, and was elevated to full university status in July 2008 by decree of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, then UAE Minister of Higher Education.
GMU is located within Thumbay Medicity in the Al Jurf area of Ajman, on a campus spanning around 100,000 square metres, and operates six colleges — Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Nursing, and Healthcare Management and Economics — offering 24 to 26 accredited programmes. The university draws students and faculty from more than 80 countries and integrates closely with its own network of Thumbay Hospitals, Clinics, and Institutes for clinical training.
GMU is accredited by the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and holds affiliations with the World Health Organization, the International Medical Sciences Academy, and other global academic bodies. In November 2025, GMU received initial CAA approval for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme through its newly formed Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine, reflecting its continued expansion across the full spectrum of health professions education.
