You earn AED 9,000 a month. The threshold to sponsor your wife and children is AED 4,000. You are comfortably clear.
Except you may not be — and this is the single most common reason family visa applications are refused.
They assess your basic salary, not your package
Immigration looks at the basic salary line on your attested employment contract. Not your total. Not what lands in your bank account.
If your AED 9,000 is made up of AED 3,500 basic plus AED 5,500 in housing, transport and other allowances, then as far as the threshold is concerned you earn AED 3,500 — and you do not qualify.
People discover this after paying for attestation, translation and medicals. Check your contract before you spend anything.
Check where you stand
The UAE Family Sponsorship Eligibility Checker applies the thresholds to your basic salary and tells you exactly what is missing.
The thresholds
- Spouse and children: AED 4,000 basic per month — or AED 3,000 if your employer provides accommodation
- Parents: considerably more (see below)
- Golden or Green visa holders: no minimum salary at all
That accommodation clause is worth knowing. If your employer houses you, the bar drops by a quarter — and plenty of people who think they fall short actually qualify under it.
Sponsoring parents is a different thing entirely
People assume that if they can bring their wife and children, parents follow easily. They do not. The requirement is roughly five times higher, and the conditions are stricter:
- You generally cannot sponsor just one parent — they are treated as a pair.
- A two-bedroom home is required. A studio or one-bed fails the housing check no matter what you earn.
- A refundable bank deposit is typically required per parent.
- The visa is usually one year, renewed annually — not the two years given for a spouse.
- Health insurance is mandatory, and premiums for parents over 60 are substantially higher.
Published figures for the salary requirement vary between sources and between emirates, so confirm your own case with GDRFA rather than relying on any number you read online — including ours.
Children: the rules are not symmetrical
- Unmarried daughters can be sponsored at any age. No upper limit.
- Sons can normally be sponsored to 18, extending to around 25 if in full-time education with proof of enrolment. Sources differ on the exact cut-off, as the rules have been revised — verify the current position.
- Children with special needs have no age restriction.
- A married daughter moves onto her husband's sponsorship.
Birth certificates issued abroad must be fully attested before they will be accepted. This is where most delays happen, and it cannot be rushed at the last minute — start it early.
If you fall short
There are routes, though none are automatic:
- A bank guarantee lodged with immigration
- Qualifying through a business, investor or freelance visa
- Having your spouse sponsor instead
- Qualifying for a Golden or Green visa, which removes the salary minimum entirely
A licensed PRO agent will know which of these actually works in your emirate for your specific case.
The lesson
Look at the basic salary line on your contract before you accept a job — not when you try to bring your family over. That one figure determines your family visa eligibility, your gratuity, your overtime rate and your sick pay. It is worth negotiating, even if the total stays the same.
