DED Trade Name Reservation and Initial Approval in the UAE Explained

Before a mainland company can move forward with licensing, it needs to clear two early gates with the Department of Economy and Tourism (or the equivalent Department of Economic Development in other emirates): trade name reservation and initial approval. These steps confirm that a business's proposed name and activity are acceptable before any deeper paperwork, such as the Memorandum of Association or office lease, needs to be finalized.

Trade name reservation involves submitting a proposed company name that reflects the legal form (LLC, FZE, Sole Establishment, and so on), avoids references to religious or government bodies unless specifically licensed, and isn't already in use or reserved by another entity. Names referencing a founder's personal name are usually allowed, while generic or potentially misleading names, such as those implying a bank or insurance company without the relevant license, are typically rejected.

Initial approval is essentially the authority's confirmation that it has no objection to the business proceeding with its chosen activity and structure. This step doesn't grant a license yet, but it does allow shareholders to move forward with drafting the Memorandum of Association, securing office space, and in some cases applying for external approvals from bodies like the Ministry of Health, Civil Defence, or Dubai Municipality if the activity requires it.

Both trade name reservation and initial approval are usually valid for a limited window, often around six months, during which the remaining license requirements need to be completed, or the applicant risks having to restart the process. Because activity classifications and external approval requirements are periodically updated, confirming current rules for a specific activity with DET or a PRO service before applying can save a rejected submission and a repeat trip.
