UAE free zones generally offer a similar core set of license categories, though naming and specific inclusions vary slightly between individual free zones, and choosing the right one affects what activities the company can legally carry out under its license.

A trading license, sometimes called a commercial or general trading license, covers the buying, selling, import, and export of specified goods, and free zones typically require the products being traded to be listed explicitly on the license, meaning a company trading electronics and one trading textiles would need their respective categories reflected, or a broader general trading license covering multiple categories at a higher cost. A service license, by contrast, covers activities like consulting, marketing, IT services, and other professional services that don't involve physical goods changing hands.

Industrial licenses within a free zone context cover manufacturing, processing, and assembly activities, and are typically tied to a physical warehouse or factory unit within the free zone's industrial area, similar to mainland industrial licensing but processed through the free zone authority rather than the emirate's industrial ministry. Freelancer permits, offered by a growing number of free zones, are a lighter-weight category aimed at individual professionals working alone, such as designers, writers, consultants, or developers, typically without the ability to sponsor employee visas beyond the individual holder.

Some free zones also offer combined or dual-activity licenses that blend elements of trading and service categories under a single license for an additional fee, which can suit businesses whose model doesn't fit neatly into one category. Because activity lists, permitted combinations, and pricing differ meaningfully between free zones, comparing a shortlist of free zones against the specific activities a business plans to carry out, rather than assuming all free zone licenses work the same way, is a worthwhile step before committing to one.
