Golden Visa vs Green Visa vs Retirement Visa: Which Long-Term UAE Residence Fits You
Published 27 Jul 2026 · 2 min read
The Green Visa sits a level below that, offering five years of self-sponsored residence to three narrower groups: skilled employees earning at least AED 15,000 a month in a qualifying occupational category, freelancers or self-employed professionals showing around AED 360,000 in annual self-employment income (or proof of financial solvency), and investors or partners holding an approved business license. It was designed deliberately as a more attainable upgrade from a standard employment visa for people who fall short of the Golden Visa's thresholds but no longer want their residence tied entirely to a single employer.
The Retirement Visa serves an entirely different population: it is restricted to applicants aged 55 or older with at least 15 years of work history, and eligibility runs through property and savings of at least AED 1 million each, or an annual income of at least AED 180,000, rather than through employment status, business ownership, or specialised skills at all. Someone under 55 cannot qualify for this route regardless of their financial position, just as someone without the Green Visa's income or qualification thresholds cannot substitute age for eligibility there.
In practice, these three visas are not really competing options for the same applicant so much as different doors that open depending on age, income source, and financial capacity: working professionals below Golden Visa thresholds generally look at the Green Visa first, retirees look at the Retirement Visa regardless of their prior income source, and higher-net-worth investors or specialised talent look at the Golden Visa. Because eligibility thresholds across all three have been adjusted at different points through 2026, applicants weighing more than one option should confirm the current criteria for each with ICP or GDRFA before deciding which route to pursue.
