How Long Can You Stay Outside the UAE Without Losing Your Visa? A Visa-by-Visa Guide
Published 27 Jul 2026 · 2 min read
For a standard employment or family residence visa, the widely cited threshold is 180 consecutive days outside the UAE; exceed that in one continuous stretch abroad and the residence visa is automatically nullified, requiring a fresh application rather than a simple re-entry, regardless of how much validity remained on the original visa. The Golden Visa and certain Green Visa categories are treated more leniently in practice: Golden Visa holders in particular are commonly described as facing no fixed requirement to return to the UAE within any set period to keep their long-term residency active, which is one of the more meaningful practical differences between the Golden Visa and a standard residence visa. The Remote Work Visa (Virtual Working Programme) sits closer to the standard rule, with guidance commonly citing a limit of six consecutive months outside the UAE before the visa is put at risk.
Retirement Visa holders and Green Visa holders generally fall under the same broad 180-day continuous-absence framework as standard residents, since their five-year validity period does not by itself override the underlying continuous-residence requirement, though the specific fine print can vary and is worth confirming directly for each category. Separate from continuous absence, a re-entry permit exists as a distinct safeguard for residents who know in advance they need to be away longer than their category's threshold allows, letting them apply to preserve their residency status for an extended trip rather than risk automatic cancellation.
Because the exact absence threshold, and how strictly it is enforced, differs by visa category and has been described somewhat inconsistently across sources for some categories, particularly newer ones like the Blue Visa and Green Visa, anyone planning an extended stay abroad should confirm their specific visa's current absence rule and, if needed, apply for a re-entry permit through GDRFA or ICP well before departure rather than after the fact.
