The UAE's visa application infrastructure has become almost entirely digital, with the specific online portal a traveler uses depending on which emirate issued or will issue their visa, a distinction that catches some applicants off guard since the UAE doesn't operate a single unified national visa portal covering every emirate identically.

For Dubai-specific visas, applications and status checks generally run through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai's own dedicated website and mobile application, distinct from the federal system used elsewhere. For visas issued in Abu Dhabi or the northern emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah), the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) operates the relevant smart services portal and mobile app instead. Beyond these government-direct channels, many visa applications, particularly tourist and visit visas, can also be submitted through airline websites (Emirates and Etihad both offer this for travelers booking flights with them) or through authorized travel agencies and typing centers acting as intermediaries.

Regardless of which specific channel is used, the underlying digital application generally requires the same core elements: passport bio-page upload, a recent passport-style photograph meeting specific technical requirements, and payment processed securely online, with the completed e-visa delivered electronically as a PDF document that travelers should print and carry alongside a digital copy when actually traveling. Given how each portal, GDRFA Dubai versus ICP versus airline-integrated systems, has its own specific interface and occasionally slightly different documentation requirements, applicants should confirm they're using the correct portal for their specific situation, generally determined by which emirate they'll be entering through or where their sponsor is based, rather than assuming any UAE visa portal works interchangeably for every application scenario.
