UAE Green Visa: Who Actually Qualifies Across All Three Routes

Published 27 Jul 2026 · 2 min read

The UAE Green Visa is a five-year, self-sponsored residence permit introduced under the executive regulations of Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021, and it sits deliberately between the standard two-year employment visa and the ten-year Golden Visa. Its defining feature is that the holder sponsors themselves rather than an employer, which means losing or changing a job does not automatically put the residence visa at risk the way it would under standard employment sponsorship.

Three distinct groups can qualify. Skilled employees need a valid employment contract, a role classified within MOHRE's first, second, or third occupational skill levels (broadly, managerial, professional, or technical positions), a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000. Freelancers and self-employed professionals instead need a valid freelance or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE or a recognised free zone authority, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and either proof of self-employment income of around AED 360,000 over the previous two years or documented proof of financial solvency for the intended residency period. A third category covers investors and partners holding an approved UAE business license, generally evidenced through company ownership documents rather than a salary certificate.

Family sponsorship terms under the Green Visa tend to be more generous than under a standard employment visa, commonly extending to a spouse, children (sons up to a certain age if still studying, unmarried daughters with no upper age limit), and in some cases parents, alongside a renewal grace period that runs longer than the standard visa's grace window. Total application costs are generally described in the low thousands of dirhams, though exact figures vary by emirate and service channel.

Deciding between the Green Visa and the Golden Visa often comes down to where an applicant's income and qualifications land: those earning in the AED 15,000 to 30,000 range, or freelancers below the Golden Visa's typical investment thresholds, are generally better suited to the Green Visa's more attainable criteria, with the option to upgrade later without penalty once their circumstances change. Because skill-level classifications, income thresholds, and documentation requirements are set by MOHRE and ICP and reviewed periodically, applicants should confirm the current criteria for their specific route before applying.
