Cancelling a UAE Investor or Freelance Visa: How Self-Sponsored Cancellation Works

Most UAE residence visas can only be cancelled by the sponsor, not the visa holder, which is why an employee generally cannot cancel their own employment visa; that has to come from the employer through MOHRE. Investor, partner, freelance, and other self-sponsored visas, including Golden Visa and Green Visa holders, are the recognised exception: because the holder effectively sponsors themselves, they can initiate their own cancellation directly through GDRFA in Dubai or ICP Smart Services in the other emirates, generally without needing anyone else's approval.

For a straightforward investor or freelance visa, the cancellation request is typically submitted online, or via a typing centre, either by the visa holder directly or through the free zone authority that originally sponsored the license and visa. Processing for investor and partner visa cancellations commonly takes a little longer than a standard employment cancellation, often cited around three to five working days rather than one to two, reflecting additional verification steps and coordination with the relevant free zone authority. A standard government cancellation fee applies, and cancellation can generally be processed even while the visa holder is physically outside the UAE, provided the visa itself is still valid at the time of the request.

One situation genuinely complicates self-cancellation: where the company's sponsor on record (common in civil company structures, where the sponsor may be someone unrelated to daily operations) is unavailable or unresponsive. In these cases, cancellation can often still proceed if the sponsor grants a notarised, attested power of attorney to another individual or a licensed PRO to act on their behalf with immigration, or if the free zone authority itself handles the cancellation as part of a broader licence closure.

Once cancelled, the standard grace period rules apply based on visa category, so anyone planning to switch to a different visa type afterwards, an employment visa through a new job offer, for example, should check current in-country status-change eligibility with ICP or GDRFA before assuming a smooth transition without any gap in legal status.
