UAE Parent Visa: Visit vs Long-Term Sponsorship Options for Elderly Parents
Published 27 Jul 2026 · 2 min read
The visit visa route is the more commonly used option for occasional or extended stays. Options typically include 30-day and 90-day family visit visas, each generally extendable by a further period subject to approval, and a multiple-entry visa, available in 6-month or up to 5-year validity, that allows a parent to enter and stay for periods commonly up to 90 days per visit without needing a fresh visa application every time. The trade-off with any visit visa, however long its overall validity, is that the holder must still periodically exit and re-enter or otherwise remain within their permitted stay per visit; it never becomes an actual residence status regardless of how many years the underlying multiple-entry visa covers.
The residence-based parent sponsorship route, sometimes handled through Amer centres in Dubai, instead requires the sponsoring child to clear a specific income threshold, commonly cited in the range of AED 20,000 a month or higher depending on the source and emirate, alongside a refundable security deposit per parent that industry guides describe somewhere between roughly AED 1,000 and AED 5,000 depending on the specific process used. Mandatory UAE-based health insurance in the parent's own name is a hard requirement across every emirate, and because premiums for older applicants run well above the standard dependant rate, this is often the single largest ongoing cost of the arrangement.
Because the exact income threshold, deposit amount, and renewal cycle for residence-based parent sponsorship have been described somewhat differently across sources, and because visit-visa validity options have themselves expanded in 2026, families should confirm the current requirements for their specific emirate and route directly with GDRFA or ICP before committing to either path.
