UAE Visa for Nigerian Citizens: Entry Requirements & the Document Verification Step

Nigerian passport holders need a pre-approved UAE visa for every entry purpose; there is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option available to Nigerian citizens, and travelling without a valid visa already issued risks being denied boarding at the departure airport or refused entry on arrival. This has been the case since UAE-Nigeria flight and visa processing resumed in late 2024, following an earlier period of disruption that some sources describe as a temporary visa ban.

A step specific to Nigerian applicants, introduced in July 2024, is the mandatory Document Verification Number (DVN), which authenticates identity documents through the UAE's Document Verification Hub before a visa application can even be submitted, and applies to Nigerian passport holders above 13 years of age. DVN processing commonly takes up to five working days, and this step cannot be skipped or bypassed regardless of which visa type or channel the applicant ultimately uses.

Once the DVN clears, the standard visa options for Nigerian travellers mirror those available more broadly: single- and multiple-entry tourist visas in 14-, 30-, and 60-day validities, with fees charged in USD and converted at prevailing exchange rates rather than offered as a flat concessionary rate. Employment routes remain available for qualified Nigerian professionals, particularly in healthcare, engineering, construction, hospitality, IT, logistics, and energy, provided a legitimate UAE-based employer sponsors the work permit and residency process; the UAE authorities have specifically warned against using unauthorised recruitment agencies or informal visa brokers for this route.

Because Nigeria's UAE visa relationship has gone through a genuine disruption and recovery cycle within the last two years, and because the DVN requirement is relatively new and specific to Nigerian applicants, travellers should apply well ahead of planned travel dates and verify current requirements directly through an authorised UAE visa processing channel or VFS Global rather than relying on older guidance describing the pre-2024 process.
