The UAE's second-hand economy has gone mainstream — used phones and laptops, furniture, luxury bags, watches, car parts — driven by a transient population that arrives needing and leaves selling. It is a genuinely different retail model: stock acquired item by item from the public, goods on consignment that you hold but do not own, and a VAT treatment of its own. Run it on standard retail habits and both the margins and the tax go wrong.
What matters here
- Per-item everything — each unit bought at its own price, graded, and sold at its own price; averages hide which buying decisions make money.
- Consignment separated — consigned goods tracked as stock you hold for an owner, with the split settled on sale; mixing it with owned stock corrupts both your balance sheet and your payouts.
- Provenance records — seller identity and purchase documentation per item, both as good practice against stolen goods and as the audit trail the trade is expected to keep.
- Margin scheme discipline — eligible second-hand sales can be taxed on the margin rather than the full price, but only with the record-keeping to support it.
The main options
Each unit lives as a serialised item in Odoo Inventory — purchase cost, grade, consignment flag and owner where applicable — so the shop knows at any moment what it owns versus what it holds. Sales ring through Odoo POS or list on the online store with per-item pricing, and the books in Odoo Accounting keep owned-stock margins, consignment payouts and margin-scheme sales in their proper lanes — which at filing time is the difference between a clean return and an archaeology project.
A caution on the margin scheme
The VAT profit margin scheme has conditions — eligible goods, how they were acquired, invoicing rules and records — and applying it casually is a common audit finding. Set the treatment per item category with your tax adviser once, encode it, and let the system apply it consistently rather than deciding at the till.
How to choose
Start with per-item tracking and honest grading; everything else builds on it. Then review buying monthly: margin achieved by category, by grade, by buyer — the person, not just the product. Second-hand retail is a buying business wearing a selling costume, and the data tells you who on your team actually knows how to buy.
