About Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) was established by executive decree in 2019 and granted a university license by the UAE Ministry of Education in April 2020, becoming the world's first graduate research university dedicated entirely to artificial intelligence. Named after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the university launched its first graduate cohort in January 2021 and introduced an undergraduate programme in 2025.
Based in the Masdar City community of Abu Dhabi, MBZUAI offers Master's and PhD programmes in computer vision, machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, computer science, and statistics and data science, alongside a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence with Engineering and Business specialisations. As of 2025 the university had 84 faculty members and more than 200 postdocs and researchers, with research hubs including the Institute of Foundation Models, the Metaverse Center, and the Institute of Digital Public Health, and it coordinated development of Jais, a leading Arabic-language AI model.
MBZUAI is a cornerstone of the UAE's National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031, and all graduate students receive full scholarships covering tuition, a monthly stipend, health insurance, and accommodation. The university has partnered with institutions including MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, and by 2025 was ranked among the global top 10 for AI, computer vision, and machine learning research according to CSRankings.
