How Employers Verify a Candidate's UAE Visa Status Before Hiring

Published 28 Jul 2026 · 2 min read

Before extending a job offer to someone already inside the UAE, employers have a genuine practical reason to verify the candidate's current visa and sponsorship status rather than taking their word for it, since sponsoring someone whose previous employment was never properly closed out can create delays or outright rejections once the new work permit application is actually submitted.

The most common issue this kind of check catches is what's sometimes informally called a "ghost" visa record: a candidate who exited a previous role or even left the UAE without their former employer properly cancelling the labour contract and residence visa, leaving an unresolved record in MOHRE's or GDRFA's system that blocks a new work permit application until it's formally cleared. This isn't necessarily the candidate's fault, since it often traces back to a previous employer failing to complete cancellation paperwork, but it becomes the new employer's problem the moment they try to sponsor that candidate.

In practice, verification generally happens through the standard channels used for any new work permit application: MOHRE's system will flag an active, unresolved labour record when the new employer submits their own work permit request, and GDRFA or ICP similarly cross-check residence visa status before processing an entry permit or status change. Employers can also generally ask a candidate directly for confirmation of their current visa status, cancellation date if applicable, and Emirates ID details as part of onboarding due diligence, rather than relying solely on the government system to catch a mismatch only once the application is already submitted.

Given how a blocked application due to an uncleared previous record can cost weeks of avoidable delay, and how the resolution generally requires tracking down the previous employer to complete their side of the cancellation, employers hiring candidates who are already inside the UAE on another sponsorship generally benefit from confirming current visa status and any pending cancellations early in the process, ideally before extending a formal offer, rather than discovering the issue only when the new work permit is unexpectedly rejected.
