If your UAE residence visa was issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain, you renew through ICP Smart Services — the federal portal run by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security — not a separate emirate-level authority the way Dubai has GDRFA.
Why this matters
Unlike Dubai, none of these six emirates has its own distinct residency authority — ICP handles residence visa renewal directly and identically across all of them. This means the underlying process (medical test, Emirates ID renewal, application, fee payment, processing) is functionally the same regardless of which of these six emirates issued your visa, differing mainly in which local typing centre or service provider you choose to help file the paperwork, not in which government body ultimately processes it.
The renewal sequence
Complete a medical fitness test, ensure active health insurance is in place (mandatory for visa stamping), submit through ICP Smart Services online, via the app, or through an authorised typing centre, then pay the applicable fees. Most categories can file up to around 179 days before expiry, though you do not need that much runway — starting four to six weeks ahead is generally enough to absorb a medical re-test or document fix without risking expiry.
