An employment-sponsored UAE residence visa is actually a two-step process — a MOHRE work permit and a separate residence visa stamping — and understanding which step is which helps explain why employment visa renewals sometimes seem to have two different timelines running at once.
The two steps, and why they are separate
The MOHRE work permit is the labour-side authorisation confirming your employment relationship is registered correctly, processed through the Tasheel channel. The residence visa stamping is the immigration-side authorisation for your physical residency in the UAE, processed through GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP Smart Services (other emirates). Both are required for a fully valid employment-sponsored residence status — one without the other leaves your file incomplete.
Why the timelines can differ
The MOHRE work-permit renewal window can open earlier than the residence-visa renewal window for the same person — commonly cited as opening up to 60 days before expiry on the labour side, while the immigration side may open closer to the expiry date itself. This is a common source of confusion, since checking only one system can give an incomplete picture of your actual renewal timeline.
What this means practically
If your employer handles your renewal, confirm both the MOHRE and GDRFA/ICP legs are being processed, not just one — a completed work permit renewal does not automatically mean your residence visa has been renewed, and vice versa.
