The salary threshold is the number everyone asks about, and it is genuinely the first gate. But applications that clear it still fail regularly, usually on things nobody mentioned.
The income thresholds
| Sponsoring | Minimum monthly salary |
|---|---|
| Spouse and children | AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with employer accommodation |
| Spouse and children (female sponsor) | AED 10,000 |
| Parents | AED 20,000, or AED 19,000 with two-bedroom accommodation |
Two things have improved in recent years. Job titles no longer determine eligibility — only salary does, which removed a layer of arbitrariness where two people on identical pay got different answers. And sponsorship of children has widened: sons up to 25 if studying, unmarried daughters without an age limit.
Golden Visa holders sit outside this framework entirely, with no minimum salary requirement and the ability to sponsor spouse and children of any age.
What actually causes rejections
Accommodation that does not match the application
You need a tenancy contract, registered through Ejari in Dubai, in your own name, with enough bedrooms for the family you are sponsoring. Sharing accommodation, living in employer housing that is not documented in your name, or holding a contract in a spouse's name all cause problems — and none of it is about how much you earn.
Sponsoring parents typically requires a two-bedroom property specifically. A high salary in a studio does not work.
Attestation
Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE need attestation in the country of issue, then by the UAE embassy there, then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here. Each stage runs on its own timetable, entirely outside your control.
This is the single most common source of delay, and it is almost always discovered too late. Start attestation before anything else in the process.
Salary evidence that does not reconcile
Authorities look at an attested salary certificate, the employment contract, three to six months of bank statements, and your WPS record. These must agree with each other. A contract stating AED 4,500 against WPS deposits of AED 3,800 is a rejection, not a rounding difference.
If your pay is partly in allowances or partly outside WPS, resolve the documentation with your employer before applying.
Applying from the wrong status
Visit visa holders cannot sponsor. Students cannot unless married. Your own residence visa must be valid with sufficient time remaining — sponsoring while your own permit is close to expiry creates an obvious problem.
If you fall short of the threshold
There are legitimate routes, though each has trade-offs. Additional documented income from freelance or part-time work can be counted where properly evidenced. Some cases can proceed against a bank guarantee deposit, refundable when the visa is cancelled. Business owners may sponsor through their own entity rather than as an employee.
What does not work is presenting an inflated salary certificate. It will not reconcile against WPS, and the consequences of a mismatch are worse than a rejection.
Costs and sequence
Budget for entry permit, status change, medical testing, Emirates ID and visa stamping per dependent, plus typing centre charges and the refundable deposit where applicable. It adds up faster than most people expect for a family of four.
Check your position against the current rules with the Family Sponsorship Eligibility tool, and work out the full cost per dependent with the Visa Cost Calculator. If Golden Visa eligibility would remove the salary test altogether, the Golden Visa Eligibility Checker is worth five minutes first.
General information only. Requirements vary by emirate and are updated regularly — confirm with ICP, GDRFA or an approved typing centre before applying.
