A UAE residence visa is not one fee. It is a sequence of them, and the total surprises people because the quoted “visa cost” usually covers only one step.
What you are actually paying for
- Entry permit — the initial authorisation to enter or change status
- Status change — if you are already in the country on another visa
- Medical fitness test — mandatory; cost varies by emirate and by whether you use the standard or express service
- Emirates ID — priced by the duration of the visa
- Visa stamping — the residence permit itself
- Health insurance — mandatory, and often the largest single line
- PRO or typing centre fees — if you are not doing it yourself
Employers usually cover the employment visa. Family and investor visas come out of your own pocket, which is where the arithmetic starts to matter.

A residence visa is renewed at the end of its term, and the process largely repeats: a fresh medical, a new Emirates ID, restamping, and renewed health insurance. There is usually a grace period after expiry — but it is a grace period, not an extension, and it is shorter than people assume.
The practical advice is unglamorous: start 30 days early. A renewal that runs into a delayed medical result, an expired passport, or an unresolved fine is how a routine renewal turns into an overstay.
Overstay fines accumulate daily
Once your visa or grace period expires, fines begin accruing per day. They do not pause, they do not expire, and they must be cleared before you can leave the country, change status, or obtain a new visa.
What makes overstay dangerous is not the daily rate. It is the compounding of consequences:
- You cannot exit until the fine is paid
- You cannot start a new job or transfer sponsorship
- Long overstays can lead to a ban on re-entry
- The longer you leave it, the fewer options you have

When you leave a job, your employer must cancel your visa. Until that happens, you remain on their sponsorship — which means you cannot start elsewhere, and any overstay after the grace period is still accruing against you.
Get written confirmation of the cancellation. Do not take a verbal assurance, and do not assume it has been done because you have left.
The one habit that avoids all of this
Put your visa expiry, your Emirates ID expiry and your passport expiry in a calendar with a 60-day reminder. Almost every expensive visa problem in the UAE traces back to somebody discovering a date too late.
