UAE Visit-to-Residence Status Change: Converting In-Country Without Exiting

Published 27 Jul 2026 · 2 min read

An in-country status change, sometimes called a status amendment, lets someone already inside the UAE on a visit or tourist visa convert to a residence visa, employment visa, investor visa, or dependant visa without physically leaving the country to re-enter on a new visa stamp. This removed the old requirement to fly out (commonly to a nearby country) purely to reset a visa status, a process travellers used to refer to as a visa run.

The most common scenario is a visit visa holder who secures a job offer while in the UAE. The employer applies for a MOHRE work permit (or the equivalent through a free zone authority), and once labour approval comes through, the employer or PRO files the status amendment request with GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates. Once the change is approved in principle, the applicant typically receives a short-term entry permit, commonly around 60 days, to complete the remaining steps, medical fitness testing, Emirates ID biometric registration, and final residence stamping, entirely without exiting the UAE. Similar in-country pathways exist for converting a visit visa to an investor visa after registering a company, or to a dependant visa after becoming eligible for family sponsorship through marriage or a parent's residency.

Eligibility depends on a few conditions holding at the time of application: the current visit visa or grace period must still be active, since an already-overstayed visa generally needs its fine settled before any status change can proceed; the passport must have at least six months of validity remaining; and the new visa category must already have been approved by the relevant authority (MOHRE for employment routes, ICP or GDRFA for others) before the amendment itself is filed. Not every visitor category qualifies for in-country processing; some GCC nationals, certain free zone entry permit holders, and a handful of specific nationalities may still be required to exit and re-enter to complete a conversion, so confirming eligibility directly with GDRFA or ICP before relying on the in-country route is worth the extra step.

Base government fees for a status change application are relatively modest, though the total cost climbs once medical testing, Emirates ID issuance, and visa stamping for the new category are added, and processing commonly takes somewhere in the range of five to fifteen working days once a complete application is filed.
