Frequently Asked Questions
How many days of maternity leave am I entitled to in the UAE?
60 calendar days total, under Article 30 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021: the first 45 days at full pay, and the remaining 15 days at half pay. This applies from your first day of employment — there's no minimum service requirement.
Do fathers get paid leave in the UAE?
Yes — Article 32 gives either parent (mother or father) 5 working days of fully paid parental leave, to be taken within 6 months of the child's birth. This is separate from and in addition to the mother's 60-day maternity leave.
Can maternity leave be extended?
Yes, in two situations: if a medical condition from the pregnancy or birth prevents you from returning to work, you can take up to 45 additional unpaid days with a medical certificate. If the child is born with a disability or serious health condition, you get an extra 30 days fully paid, plus an optional further 30 days unpaid.
Can my employer make me return to work before the 60 days end?
No. An employer cannot require early return — it can only happen at the employee's own voluntary, written request.
What are nursing breaks and how long do they last?
After returning to work, a mother is entitled to up to 2 paid nursing breaks per day, totalling no more than 1 hour, for 6 months from the date of return.
Is this calculator legal advice?
No. It applies the statutory day counts and pay tiers to the salary you enter. Specific situations — government sector rules, DIFC/ADGM employment, or medical complications — can differ, so confirm anything contentious with MOHRE or a legal professional.
