Free Zone Employee Visa Sponsorship in the UAE: How the Process Actually Works

The process still follows a recognisable sequence. The free zone company needs an active establishment card and immigration card, generally renewed annually, before it can sponsor any employee visas at all, and the number of visas available is tied to the company's license package and, in many free zones, the office or flexi-desk space it holds. Once a job offer and employment contract are in place, the free zone authority processes an entry permit (or an in-country status change if the employee is already in the UAE on another visa), followed by the same medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometric registration, and residence visa stamping steps used across the wider UAE system.
Employment under a free zone visa carries one restriction that catches some employees by surprise: the holder is generally authorised to work only within the issuing free zone or for the sponsoring company, and taking on paid work outside that scope without additional approval is treated as a visa violation, unlike a mainland employment visa, which permits work anywhere in the UAE for the sponsoring employer. Total employee visa costs, covering the work permit, entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID, and visa stamping, are commonly bundled by the free zone authority into a single per-visa package, though exact figures vary meaningfully between zones.
Standard free zone employee visas are typically valid for two years, renewable as long as employment continues, and separate from the investor or partner visa a shareholder would hold in their own right (which is usually tied to a minimum share capital threshold set by the individual free zone). Because visa quotas, bundled fee structures, and renewal terms differ from one free zone authority to the next, employers should confirm the specifics with their own free zone before budgeting for a new hire.
